The Boy on the Go
It took me some time to figure out what narrative I wanted to shoot, but it finally came to me: a childhood narrative. The series is titled The Boy on the Go, all about a young, adventurous pre-teen who loved walking around exploring his city. I had my nephew (The Boy) act as the pre-teen version of me, strategically focusing on his clothing, props (backpack and headphones), and positioning. Each photo is staged to capture The Boy making his way around his city, with each scene being exact places that I traveled to when I was younger. Walking was a way for me to learn more about my city, even if I didn’t know where I was going, all of which is evident in each photo. All in all, exploring something more deeply allows you to learn things that you never would’ve expected.
This project was on showing in the 2023 BLACK JUBILATION Exhibition at Michigan State University's (SCENE) Metrospace.
